Job Description

 

Job Title: Youth Services Assistant

 

Job Classification:

 

  • Full or part-time (25 hours/week minimum)

  • Reports to Youth Services Librarian

 

Essential Functions:

 

  • Staffing the youth circulation desk including days, evenings, and two Saturdays a month

  • Performing clerical duties and specialized tasks within the youth department

  • Planning and presenting programs under the supervision of the Youth Services Librarian

  • Supporting collection development by keeping the department materials organized, shelf reading, helping with weeding, and reviewing materials for damage or replacement

  • Maintaining accurate youth department statistics

  • Upholding and enforcing library policies

  • Staffing the main circulation desk and branch library as needed

 

Other Responsibilities:

 

  • Conducting in-library tours and programs for groups, when requested

  • Visiting schools, daycares, community organizations and community events

  • Making & stocking displays coordinated by the Librarians

  • Supporting the library experience by tidying the library and readying it at opening and closing

  • Providing instruction in the use of information tools to patrons, as needed

  • Pursuing continuing education opportunities

  • Other duties as assigned by the Youth Services Librarian or the Library Director

 

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

 

  • High school diploma

  • Experience working with children

  • Basic computer literacy

  • Self-direction and resourcefulness

  • Attention to details and organization

  • Ability to work with the public in a friendly, professional, and responsive manner

  • Communication skills that allow interaction with other staff and the public

 

Desirable Requirements/Qualifications:

 

  • Work experience in a public library

  • Basic knowledge of children’s literature

 

Physical Demands:

  • Use hands and fingers to use scissors and handle books, paper, and technology

  • Speak and listen to others

  • See and read

  • Reach with hands and arms

  • Stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl

  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds

 

Salary:

​

per salary schedule; beginning wage $13.00 per hour, depending on previous work experience and education, nonexempt from FLSA
